PJM July 2026 Heat Wave Timelapse

Seventy-three seconds over PJM's July 2026 heat wave: real-time nodal prices, the emergency ladder, and demand response. Preliminary figures.

Fourteen days, June 23 to July 6, in seventy-three seconds. The map colors each of just over 10,000 PJM pricing nodes by its own five-minute price, drawing a ring around any node above $3,000/MWh; NYISO's zonal prices fill in over New York, the background shading is modeled temperature, and the chips at the right track PJM's emergency-procedures ladder from a Hot Weather Alert up through emergency load management. The evenings of July 1, 2, and 3 run at twelve times the resolution of the rest of the film. The node prices carry the full congestion signal; warm lines show binding transmission-line and interface constraints where the matcher could resolve approximate corridor geometry, drawn from HIFLD and OpenStreetMap (line geometry © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL; see Methods and Sources).

This timelapse is from the PJM July 2026 heat-wave case study, a primary-source reconstruction of how PJM's demand-response fleet held its July 2 peak below the 2006 record at a multi-year fleet low.
